Panchkarma

Panchkarma – The soul of Ayurved

The first aim of Ayurved is to prevent the occurrence of disease and secondly to treat the already existing diseases. Panchshodhan or Panchkarma is the branch which is helpful in fulfilling both these aims. Human body contains three main doshas i.e. VATA, PITTA and KAPHA. These are considered as the prime reason for any disease occurring in the human body. These doshas are present in every human body in a specific natural proportion which is required to carry out the daily activities of the body. However, when they increase or decrease due to any reasons, may be seasonal or personal behaviour, they start producing signs and symptoms which further take the form of a disease.

Panchkarma is that special design of treatment which is aimed to remove this unwanted amount of Doshas which are responsible for disease production in the body. The word PANCHKARMA means 5 procedures and PANCHSHODHAN means 5 purification procedures which purify the human body from the above said extra amount of Doshas and help is maintaining their equilibrium which is utmost necessary to lead a healthy disease free life.

VAMAN

The first amongst these karmas is VAMAN. This is the procedure in which unwanted amount of Kapha is removed from the body. This is a process of medicated induced vomiting in which Kapha is removed without causing any other complications to the patient. It is not like regular vomiting which contains forceful evacuation of the stomach contents from the human body. However it is performed after a small procedure of Purva-karma which stimulates accumulation of Kapha dosha

in the stomach and this Kapha dosha only with small amount of Pitta is removed from the body. Mouth is considered as the nearest opening from which Kapha can be removed, hence Vaman is specifically indicated for it. Vaman is performed in the month of Chaitra which comes in Vasant ritu. This has been indicated for normal healthy person who wishes to be free from any kind of Kapha diseases. A person already suffering from Kapha disease can perform Vaman anytime of the year.
